2016 Julien Pilon Cote-Rotie 'La Porchette' N. Rhone
Winemaker Notes: Julien Pinon was born in Condrieu. Appropriately, 80% of his production is white wine, including Marsanne and Roussanne as well as Viognier. His family are not vignerons, and he learned his craft by working in Spain and Roussillon before returning to his home.
The grapes for this Cote-Rotie are organically grown and hand harvested. The wine spends 18 months in oak barrels, 30% new.
Wine Spectator - "Starts with pepper and savory notes before giving way to sleek red currant and damson plum fruit. The finish is carried by a sanguine thread. Not big, but long and very focused. Best from 2019 through 2030. 333 cases made, 42 cases imported."
“This has definitely become a domaine to watch. The wines are very much in the image of the vigneron too – understated, stylish and relying more on nuance than overt power.” - Wine Spectator
Vinous - "Inky ruby. An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes raspberry preserves, boysenberry, incense, candied violet and smoky minerals. Energetic, palate-staining black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors are complicated by exotic spice, olive and smoky bacon nuances. Closes on a youthfully tannic note, showing sharp delineation, strong tenacity and resonating dark berry notes."
