2012 Veuve Clicquot 'La Grande Dame x Yayoi Kusama Limited Edition' with Reveal Gift Box
Veuve Clicquot and Iconic Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama are sending the world a message of Hope and optimism celebrating the House new vintage, LA GRANDE DAME 2012. It is with its iconic symbols, the flower and the polka dots, that Yayoi Kusama adorns La Grande Dame 2012 case and bottle. The polka dots, Yayoi Kusama’s signature patterns evoke Champagne bubbles. Created in honor of Madame Clicquot called “la Grande Dame de Champagne” in her time, La Grande Dame perfectly expresses the Maison’s love for Pinot Noir.
Despite 150 years that separate them, parallels can be drawn between the lives of Madame Clicquot and Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. Fighters, pioneers, entrepreneurs, modern women, writers – these facets are united in the optimism and creative power of the flower, an artwork created by a grande dame of art in tribute to a grande dame of champagne.
The story began in 2006 when Yayoi Kusama used her distinctive polka dot pattern to reimagine a classic painting of Madame Clicquot for a charity auction in Tokyo. Entitled Twist with Madame Clicquot!, it inspired a collaboration between Veuve Clicquot, an iconic champagne maison founded by a determined and successful woman, and Kusama, a world-renowned female artist.
The flower on the gift box is decorated in playful colours, while inside, the label of La Grande Dame has been reimagined with Kusama's distinctive polka dots, to symbolize the vibrant sparkle of champagne bubbles.
With its highly capricious weather, few could have predicted the outcome of the 2012 harvest. But ultimately, the year’s warmth and sunshine prevailed to help define this exceptional vintage. A fine example of the La Grande Dame style, this cuvée perfectly expresses the radiant maturity of the 2012 harvest and the finesse and complexity of Pinot Noir.
In the spring, rainfall was 60% above average, followed by late frost and severe hailstorms that devastated more than 1,000 hectares of Champagne vineyards. After a difficult start to the season and multiple climatic vagaries (frosts, torrential rain, thunderstorms, hail, cold), mildness prevailed, and nature brought warmth and dry summer weather. The summer season established itself in mid-August with perfect sunshine conditions, very dry weather and high temperatures until the end of the harvest, producing high-quality grapes with good maturity and balance, similar to those of 1989 and 2002.
Tastings of the base wines revealed depth, intensity, length and perfect balance. Despite the modest harvest in terms of quantity, this excellent quality convinced the Cellar Master to declare 2012 a vintage year and create a new edition of La Grande Dame. La Grande Dame 2012 blend is made mainly from grapes from historical Grands Crus vineyards, among the most prestigious in Champagne.
On the nose: Initial notes of white flowers, such as jasmine, honeysuckle and vine flowers can be felt and then opens with fruitier nuances of apple, pear and peach. A few notes of fresh almond and frangipane complete the bouquet.
On the palate: The cuvée reveals more complex aromas: dried apricot, hazelnuts, honey and sugar candy. Silky textures give the wine its personality, elegance and character. The aging has imparted particular depth and power to the wine.
Wine Enthusiast - "With a slight preponderance of Pinot Noir in the blend, this wine is rich and impressive. It is still young, with a crisp edge that makes the fruit shine. Apple and citrus flavors are integrated into a mineral vein. Drink from 2022."
Decanter - "A generous golden colour betrays the dominance of Pinot Noir in the blend; this theme thereafter maintained by the aromatics of fig, wild strawberries and the Mirabelle plums; behind that, jasmine, red apples and a distant whiff of woodsmoke. Engaging already, in other words. One's impressions are confirmed and amplified on the palate, with the aspiration voiced by chef de caves, to allow the 'cooler' Pinot Noir sites full rein. This is eloquently evidenced by a subtle and deftly textured structure, the primary fruit notes of nectarine and citrus peel underscored by a richer, still somewhat reticent, core, darker and more savoury of intent and oh, so subtle at the moment. I have every confidence that this characteristic will come into its own over the longer term and mark the 2012 as one of the more successful outings for this outstanding cuvée"
Wine Spectator- "Fine and graceful, this dances across the palate with its bright, well-defined freshness and detailed flavors of Mandarin orange, toast point, crème de cassis and minerally oyster shell. Subtle in its intensity, with all the pieces seamlessly knit into an elegant whole."
