Burghound - "Subtle but not invisible wood frames the layered and complex nose of dark berry fruit, stone, herbal tea and distinctly sauvage aromas. There is good volume and excellent power to the dense and serious mineral-inflected medium weight flavors that deliver impressive length on the balanced finish. This terrific effort is a lovely combination of moderate refinement with excellent power and persistence. One to look for. *Outstanding*"
Vinous - "The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux St-Jacques is a great wine. To be honest, at the beginning it comes across as rather bold and showy, perhaps more New World than Burgundy. However, it really comes into its own after 90 minutes in the glass. It completely mellows on the nose, offering ripe and beautifully defined crushed strawberry, raspberry and pomegranate scents tinged with vanilla and violet. The palate is ripe and supple on the entry, the plush cassis and blackcurrant fruit countered by a keen line of acidity and wonderful harmony towards the finish. If you want to broach this in its youth then I strongly advise decanting for an hour or two, or preferably leave it in the cellar for another three or four years."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques from Domaine Denis Mortet has a sense of confidence on the nose with upfront raspberry preserve, cranberry and red cherry notes with an underlying mineralité that will come through once the patina of new oak subsides. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, rounded tannin, quite fat and voluminous in the mouth, a little modern in style but still balanced and thoroughly pleasurable. I wonder whether this evolve in bottle and achieve its impressive performance from barrel? As such, give this another three or four years."
